Three hours. Every single article.
That was my content research reality. Open ten browser tabs, manually dig through SERPs, scrape PAA boxes, check Reddit and Quora for real questions, compare competitor gaps, then stitch it all into a brief. By the time I sat down to write, I was already exhausted.
Then I built an AI agent to do it for me. Now the same process takes 20 minutes — and the output is better.
Here’s exactly how I set it up.
Why Manual Content Research Breaks Down at Scale
Content research sounds simple until you’re doing it for ten articles a month. Each piece needs fresh keyword clusters, a scan of what’s currently ranking, a pulse check on real user questions, a gap analysis against competitors, and a brief that’s actually useful for writing — not just a list of keywords.
Do that manually and you’re spending 30–45 minutes on keyword mapping alone. Another 30–40 on SERP review. Forum scanning, competitor checks, brief writing — it compounds fast.
The real problem isn’t time. It’s that manual research is inconsistent. Some days you miss things. You skip competitor analysis when you’re rushed. The brief is thin. The article suffers.
An agent doesn’t skip steps. It doesn’t get tired. And it runs the same process every single time.
The Stack Behind the Workflow
I’m not using anything exotic here. The agent runs on a small infrastructure stack I already had:
- Orchestrator LLM — handles planning, routing, and synthesis (Claude Sonnet-class)
- Search tool — live SERP queries, PAA box extraction, competitor URL discovery
- Scraper — lightweight content extraction from top-ranking pages
- Forum scanner — Reddit, Quora, and relevant niche communities for real questions
- Brief generator — structured output in a consistent template
The agent is stateless per run. You give it a seed topic, it does its thing, it hands you a research brief. No UI, no dashboard — just a prompt in, structured output out.

The 5-Step Research Loop
The agent follows a fixed sequence on every run. Here’s what each step does:
Step 1 — Keyword Mapping
Takes the seed term and expands it into intent clusters. Not just volume-based synonyms — it groups by search intent: informational, navigational, commercial, transactional. Each cluster becomes a potential angle for the piece.
Step 2 — SERP Analysis
Pulls the top 10 results for the primary keyword. Scores each page for content depth, format type (list, guide, comparison, etc.), estimated word count, and topical coverage. This tells me what Google is currently rewarding for this query.
Step 3 — Question Mining
Extracts every PAA (People Also Ask) question for the target keyword cluster, then cross-references with relevant Reddit threads and Quora answers. The output is a ranked list of real user questions sorted by frequency and specificity.
Step 4 — Gap Analysis
Compares my existing published content against what the top competitors cover. Flags subtopics that nobody in the top 10 addresses well — those become priority sections in the brief.
Step 5 — Brief Generation
Synthesises everything into a structured writing brief: recommended title, target word count, H2/H3 structure, key questions to answer, competitor references to beat, and a summary of intent signals. The brief is ready to hand off to a writer (human or AI) immediately.
What Actually Changed
The time savings are obvious. Three hours down to twenty minutes — that’s the headline number. But the real shift is what happens downstream.
When your briefs are consistently thorough, your articles are consistently better. When you’re not exhausted from research, you write with more energy. When every piece starts from a gap-analysis foundation, you’re not accidentally recreating content that already exists.
The agent also surfaces things I would have missed manually. Questions I didn’t think to search for. Competitor content that outranks me on subtopics I thought I owned. Forum threads where users are asking about problems I hadn’t considered covering.

The Numbers After 30 Days
I ran this on every article for a month to validate it wasn’t just a fast first run. Here’s what the data showed:
- 847 keywords analysed across all runs
- 120 SERP pages reviewed — the agent pulled and scored 12 per article on average
- 312 questions mined from PAA boxes and forums
- 2h 40m saved per article on average, compared to my previous manual process
Across ten articles that’s 26+ hours returned to actual writing, publishing, and promotion. That’s not marginal — that’s a full additional workday per week.
What the Agent Can’t Replace
This isn’t a “AI does everything” post. The agent handles the mechanical, repeatable parts of research. What it can’t do:
- Editorial judgment — choosing which angle actually fits your audience and brand
- First-hand experience — if your competitive edge is lived knowledge, no brief captures that
- Trend detection beyond data — the agent works from existing search signals; emerging trends with no search volume yet are invisible to it
- Relationship context — knowing why your readers care, not just what they search for
Think of it as an extremely fast, thorough research assistant. You still make the calls.
How to Set This Up Yourself
The architecture isn’t locked to any single tool. You can replicate this with:
- An AI model with tool-calling capability (Claude, GPT-4, Gemini)
- A search API (Brave Search, SerpAPI, or Dataforseo)
- A scraper library (Playwright, Puppeteer, or a hosted service)
- A structured output template for the brief format you need
If you’re on a no-code stack, tools like n8n or Make can orchestrate the same flow with third-party integrations — it just runs slower and costs more per query.
The minimum viable version is a single LLM call with a well-structured prompt and web search enabled. That alone gets you 60–70% of the benefit. The full agent loop with gap analysis and forum scanning gets you the rest.
The Bigger Picture
Content research was always a solved problem — just an expensive one. Agencies charged for it because it required hours of skilled labour. The gap is closing fast.
If you’re still doing this manually, you’re spending time you could be redirecting to distribution, relationship-building, and the creative work that actually differentiates you. The research is table stakes. Automate it.
The agent doesn’t care if it’s article three or article three hundred. Same process, same depth, same output every time.
That’s the point.
