Most productive people – includes those whose computers act as their second brain- take care of their resources. Their keyboards and other external computer accessory gadgetry will always be neat and well maintained. One thing to put in mind is that, the care you give to the computer hardware should match the one you give to the software programs and the files you store in there- which may be work in progress or completed projects. Nevertheless, anyone who has used a computer may lose or get some files corrupted.
The Root of Data Corruption and Loss
Just like you are always careful not to spill liquids – like coffee – on the computer keyboards, you should be more concerned about the safety of your data constantly. Loss and corruption of data may be as a result of power-related issues, hard drive rebooting, hardware problems, improper ejecting of external storage devices, bad programming, just to mention but a few.Â
The worst known hit for corrupting files in your computer are viruses and worms. Worst case scenario, the operating system may be attacked by a bad boot sector and fails to start at any cost. This will ultimately mean that all the data which was not backed up will be lost.
Approaches to Avert Data Corruption and Loss
In the event of hardware problems, attack by boot sectors and your computer being stolen, you are likely to lose loads of files. You, therefore, need a backup plan, however simple or sophisticated – as long as it serves the purpose. Getting an Uninterrupted power supply is one way to eliminate the problem of power outages.
I am one of the victims of data loss; got my laptop stolen when I was writing my dissertation. Without any backup, I got stuck with the keyboards, retyping everything. When dealing with light files; word, excel and PDFs for instance, emailing a copy to your free email account is just but enough.Â
Big firms and individuals with precious data should, therefore, adopt all-inclusive backup and recovery solutions for their computers. External storage devices also come in handy; you make a copy of your files and ensure the safety of the devices.
Besides the few ways to back up and ensure safety of your files, it is paramount to have up to date anti-virus and internet security software. Viruses are known to corrupt files, even when backed up.Â
