Amazon’s popular Kindle Fire is reportedly due to receive an update next year, which may be known as the Kindle Fire 2 or Kindle Fire 8.9, in reference to the new tablet’s 8.9†screen. That’s almost two inches wider than the current Kindle incarnation, which was reportedly rushed to market with a 7†screen and used the same hardware and designers as the ill-fated BlackBerry PlayBook.
The Kindle Fire 2 will be made by Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, who are well known for producing Apple’s iPad series among many other products. The Fire 2 will reportedly be manufactured from May next year, in time for a launch in June.
Amazon are also planning to launch a 10.1†version of the Fire in 2012. This tablet could be more powerful, and will compete more directly against the similarly sized iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Many tablets next year are due to see impressive hardware upgrades, and it’s unknown if Amazon will follow the same path with the low-cost Kindle Fire.
A third generation iPad, whether it is the iPad 3 or iPad 2S, is on the way and is expected to come with a Retina display that reaches a resolution of 2048 x 1536, significantly better than full HD (1920 x 1080). It also may come with a quad core processor, something that has already been confirmed for several Android tablets, including the Asus Transformer Prime and the HTC Quattro.
It should be an exciting year – if you were planning on picking up a tablet for the holidays, you may be well served by waiting another six months – quad core processors and full HD displays will make these new super tablets much more capable than their predecessors. The leap will also leave a nice gap for Amazon, who will doubtlessly use it to produce a tablet powerful by today’s standards that can still beat the big boys on price.
