Grand Theft Australia: Australia’s $500 Million Dollar Heist

If you’re a construction worker, lock up your cranes, according to statistics featured on Compare the Market’s latest infographic.

Entitled Grand Theft Australia: a snapshot of stolen vehicles in 2013, the infographic reveals that thieves are taking on much grander pursuits for the thrill of a quick joy ride. In the 2012/13 financial year, 59 tractors, 43 forklifts and one crane were stolen from farm and building sites around the country.

In addition to the weird and wonderful types of vehicles stolen, the infographic also highlights the serious underground car scrap metal industry, featuring the fact that a number of cars stolen are either converted to scrap metal or exported from Australia.
