Asus ROG Phone 2 complete review – Is This The Best Phone For Gaming

As the mobile gaming industry is getting bigger, more and more manufactures are trying to make phones that could please the gamers. And the Asus ROG Phone 2 is an excellent phone for gamers.

But the question is, what makes a phone a gaming phone? Is it a phone, or it is a device that can play games in the best way possible. Or it depends on the hardware that the phone is getting? If it is about hardware, then there are quite a lot of other phones like OnePlus 7T can also be called as a gaming phone.

According to Asus, this phone is made out of the best components available in the market. Along with that, it features a unique speed-focused Snapdragon 855+ soc under its hood. Plus, you are getting LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 3.0 storage.

The device also comes with a 6.59-inch touch screen display with a resolution of 1080×2340 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. Also, the device runs on Android 9 Pie, and a 6000mAh non-removable battery backs it.

As far as it comes to the camera department, it features a 48-megapixel primary camera and a second 13-megapixel camera on the back. Also, on the front, you are getting a 24-megapixel camera for your selfies. 

Price and availability

In India, you can get the phone for Rs.37,999 for the base variant. And it comes with 8GB of RAM along with 128GB of internal storage.

While the other variant is priced at Rs.59,999, and it comes with 128GB of RAM and has 512GB of storage.

Along with that, you will be getting an 18W Quick Charge 4.0 adapter with the base variant of the ROG Phone 2 along with an Aero case. And in case if you buy the higher option, then it features a 30W ROG fast charging adapter, Aero case, and AeroActive Cooler II in the box.

 

Design

Talking about the design, it comes with a deception looking design. Along with the aerodynamic system highlighted by the copper grill. The device chassis is made out of aluminum with Gorilla Glass 6 on the back. ROG Phone has dedicated air triggers on the side of the bezel for dedicated function buttons for the games. You can individually configure the air triggers based on specific games.

One more additional feature of the ROG phone is side USB C port. Yes, ROG phone has 2 USB C ports on the bottom like any regular phone and one on the side bezel. This helps the phone to attach to the Dock accessory. You can also connect any USB C headphones or adapter and its like charm. it won’t tangle on the side, which is one of the drawbacks of side port in mobile gaming. You can also use this side USB C port to charge ROG phone too.

Under the glass, there is a circuit-like line run along the body of the phone, which shines in different colors. Also, on the back, there is an RGB logo of ROG dead-center on the back, which can be controlled via the Aura Sync app. The overall weight of the phone is about 240 grams.

Display

The display of the Asus ROG Phone 2 is pretty amazing, and once you use it, there is no going back. It is an AMOLED display that features a 120Hz refresh rate. Although, as of now, there is no mobile game that offers you 120 FPS.

But whatever game you play, will look smoother on this device. Also, most of the apps will be using up to 60 FPS, while games like Vainglory, Minecraft, Dead Trigger 2 can go up to 90 FPS. Along with that, you will be getting 1ms response time and the 240Hz touch latency. 

As a result, the phone process touch input is much faster than any other smartphone in the market. 

Battery

The Asus ROG Phone 2 does not only features with Snapdragon 855+ and an HDR AMOLED display. But it also comes with a massive battery of 6,000mAh. Of course, as you play games, your phone will drain a lot of battery, and this much battery backup was needed.

Because of this massive battery, you will be able to get battery life throughout the day. Even if you play all your games at maxed settings.

If I talk about stats, then the device only drains battery up to 5 percent for 30 minutes of Netflix in HDR. It consumes about 5 percent of battery for 15 minutes of PUBG. Also, if you are someone who is not into gaming, the battery might run up to two days.

However, the other issue over here is that the charging as it has a massive battery, so you will need to spend a lot of time charging your device. But to tackle this issue, Asus is shipping a 30W charger out of the box. Along with that, it supports USB PD 3.0 and QC 4.0. As a result, your phone will get charged up within 90 minutes.

Camera

The Asus ROG Phone 2 features a 48 MP dual camera. Along with that, it pairs a Sony IMX586 48MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens along with a 13MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.4 aperture lens on the rear panel.

While on the front panel, you are getting a 24MM for selfies and video calls. The primary camera of the device is also stabilized using a gyroscope-based EIS. However, there is no OIS. Also, you are getting a dedicated night mode feature that works amazingly with both the primary and ultra-wide lens and a pro-mode. However, there is no RAW photo support.

Bottom Line

Overall, if you are interested in gaming, then this is the best phone that you can get. It has all the features and design that would impress any gamer out there. But in case if you are a casual gamer, then having the Oneplus 7T can also be a great idea.

In short, the phone is more focused on the gaming part and not too much into a daily usage phone. So you need to ask yourself whether gaming is important for you or having a phone with all the features and decent gaming experience would satisfy your needs.
